Ides and ABB have jointly developed ABB Marine Ultimate Engineering platform, based on technology from Ides and configuration tools and libraries from ABB’s business unit Marine and Cranes in Norway. With the ADG functions (Automatic Data Generation) within Ides elMaster, ABB moves engineering to the next generation of project efficiency. The goal with the platform is to achieve higher quality and to generate ABB engineering data) and documentation for integrated power, control and drives systems.
Before Ides’ elMaster ADG came into the picture, ABB’s business unit Marine needed an easier way of creating engineering data and drawings for customer projects. There was too much time spent on manual draft work. By creating the engineering data/documents in a more automatic way, the engineers now can focus more on core engineering for higher quality and security. With a simple command the project data and documentation are automatically generated, based on information from the ABB Ultimate Engineering Configurator. By this it is also easy to create preliminary drawings very fast.
“We work with complete vessel electrical design for power and control. ABB is a system integrator and we need a modern engineering tool for our complete system design and that is why we have chosen Ides elMaster engineering platform. This includes automatic generation of project documentation. Thanks to elMaster ADG we can be more cost effective and improve quality in all our projects”, says Øistein Martinsen, Engineering manager, at ABB’s marine operations in Norway.
Complete commitment
ABB's business unit Marine in Norway is specialized in deliveries of electric propulsion systems, power generation, distribution systems and variable speed drives to oil and gas related vessels, such as offshore supply vessels, LNG carriers and drilling vessels. ABB also offers a comprehensive service solution for their global customers. ABB takes care of the complete life cycle of the product, from design and project execution to commissioning to operational and upgrade needs. ABB has an on-call service which means 24-hour telephone support, technical support from system specialists and onboard service from their expert service engineers.
Spectacular vessels
ABB delivers products all over the world, and in Norway the marine unit specializes in the oil and gas business. One example of their solutions is the Provalys LNG carrier, owned by Gaz de France and built at Aker Yards (previously Chantier d’Atlantique). It has been in operation since 2006. ABB delivered electric propulsion system and propulsion control system for the LNG carrier. The electric propulsion system includes: electric propulsion motor, variable speed propulsion drives, propulsion supply transformers and main switchboard. The benefits from the solutions are energy efficiency, reliability and availability and naturally global service support. Other spectacular vessels that ABB delivers propulsion applications to are for example cruisers, tankers and ice breakers.
